Web3 Beginner Tips from Five of the Leading Builders in the Space

Web3 can be an intimidating realm to navigate, especially when you’re just starting out. As you begin to explore the world of blockchain and crypto, you’ll encounter a plethora of technical jargon. It has a tendency to make you feel lost and more confused because this industry is so different from what we’re all used to.

Learning anything new, including Web3, can be an overwhelming endeavor. That’s why we spoke to five of the savviest builders in the Philippine Web3 community to ask what advice they can share to beginners like you.

1. Start small and work your way up.

Nio Martinez, the core and lead developer of Astro XP, agreed that Web3 is a very vast space. However, it has many sub areas that you can explore.

These sub areas include GameFi, DeFi, Art and the Metaverse just to name a few. He encourages you to pick one you enjoy and start exploring from there.

“Choose one that aligns with your interests and hobbies. Once you [have] already decided on that, start small and execute. No matter how small, no matter how puny, just execute, and repeat. Now, watch your brain muscle memory magic take place,” he explained.

2. Hit The Books

For Oliver Lance De Leon, Binance‘s Market Surveillance Officer, the best way to get started in Web3 is to hit the books.

According to him, if you want to succeed in this industry, it’s vital that you acquire knowledge and get some Web3 certifications under your belt. On a more practical note, he also encourages you to reach out to other people in the industry and start learning from them.

“Sure, it might not be the most exciting thing in the world, but trust me, it pays off. And don’t be shy about reaching out to others in the field for advice.

I remember messaging people on LinkedIn and asking them about how they got into their roles. It’s a great way to get some insider tips on breaking into the industry,” Oliver added.

3.  Technology > Charts

By now we’re all aware that crypto and NFTs, the two main components of Web3, are volatile. Its prices are hard to predict. Especially when there’s money involved, volatility can be very discouraging for newcomers.

This risk often turns people off from pursuing a career or participating in Web3. That’s why Gelo Wong, the CEO of Likha NFT, advices you to focus on the technology behind Web3 rather than the market prices.

“If you’re entering as an investor, look at the bigger picture. If you’re entering as a builder, build because of the tech,” he explained.

4. Trust But Verify

Speaking of turning people off, the prevalence of scams and hacks has made it more challenging to onboard more people to Web3.

As a result, many individuals may not even attempt to learn to understand it.  To navigate this challenge, Tiong suggests adopting a “trust but verify” approach and to not be afraid of committing a few mistakes. As most people in Web3 say, DYOR or “Do your own research.”

Tiong is a Web3 enthusiast and an on-chain data nerd. He’s been around in the space for quite a while and he attests that Web3 is full of opportunities for those who are open to learning and embracing its full essence.

“Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. We’ve been programmed to always strive for perfection.

In a world that’s constantly evolving, it’s important to have a growth mindset and learn from your mistakes, instead of being paralyzed by the fear of failure.

It will make us more grounded and give us the grit and perseverance to try again,” Tiong added.

5. Dream Big and Work Hard

The last piece of advice for this article comes from Kenneth Roluma, the CEO of Alpha Philippines (Alpha PH), the largest and most exclusive Filipino-only Alpha and Web3 community.

Roluma himself was once a newbie in the space, and now he’s leading a group of Filipino Web3 enthusiasts. From 8-10 believers, his group now has more than 500 verified members. His advice for you is simple: to dream big and work hard.

“Just dream big, but don’t forget to work hard because miracles will not work for you. Miracles are just a bonus in life, working hard is the main fuel to start the engine and reach the destination you want,” he explained.

In Conclusion

Web3 may seem daunting and overwhelming at first, but it doesn’t have to be. When you arm yourself with the right resources and a willingness to learn, you might be surprised with how fast your progress goes.

We hope that these 5 tips help you get a sense of how to better navigate this space. Web3 can offer endless opportunities for growth and success, and the journey can be rewarding for those who are willing to put in the effort.
