The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announces its plan to build an online-based metaverse campus called Metahkust. The launch of the virtual reality classroom is part of their bigger plan to establish the world’s first physical-digital twin campuses, an extended reality (XR) campus for both HKUST and their Guangzho campus. HKUST aims to innovate and to take a step to the digital era to enhance learning experiences.

They will host the opening of the new HKUST Guangzhou campus in September 2022. The construction of the first mixed reality classroom on the campus is on progress. The facilities will be available to faculty and students of the two campuses at the same time in two paralleled physical spaces. Other than that, the institution is continuously developing the virtual world’s display details to deliver the best virtual experience for the HKUST campus.

Vice-president for institutional advancement at HKUST, Wang Yang shared the metaverse is “here to stay”. Despite the challenges, HKUST believe this technology can innovate learning.
The metaverse is the virtual world where people can connect, interact, and work via digital avatars.
