JC Macalintal, the CMO of Bitskwela, has made a name for himself as a venture developer, full-stack marketer, agency builder, and community builder.
With a track record of generating over 10 figures in revenue for partners and developing more than 100 ventures, JC’s entrepreneurial journey has been nothing short of impressive.
But before all that, like most Web3 degens, JC started as a freelancer too.
We sat down with JC to hear how he switched careers from being a freelancer to a Web3 innovator.
JC Macalintal’s Background In Web2
JC’s love for writing and journalism started early, when he began competing in writing contests and press conferences in grade school.
In high school, he used his knack for writing to do freelance work in digital marketing and community building, which eventually led him to work with international clients in real estate and e-commerce.
When the pandemic hit, JC faced a difficult decision: he had just been accepted into his dream school, UP Diliman, but he chose to drop out for a year to build his own marketing agency with his closest friends. The plan was to try it out for a year and if they didn’t see any results, they would return to school. They worked hard and took a risk, and it paid off.
Right around the same time, JC co-founded SMMPH (Social Media Marketing Philippines) Community, a Facebook Community of over 74,500 members and growing, dedicated to provide information and support to anyone who wishes to learn more about social media marketing.
How Did JC Get Into Web3?
Even before the explosion of interest in Web3, JC had already started to explore this space. It was his brother who introduced him to crypto in 2018.
“One night, my brother, Manman, asked me, “Bro, how much did you earn for the past 3 months?” and then, of course, we chatted about it for a while, and that’s where he told me that he earned the same money I earned for three months in just one night by trading.
That’s when I got introduced to crypto for the first time. He introduced me to how blockchain works, what Web3 is, and all of that stuff,” JC explained.
Realizing that he could leverage his marketing skills for the emerging industry, he made the transition and dove in head first. He was already doing marketing and writing so he thought, why not explore the Web3 market as well?
“I was able to utilize all the skills I gained in Web2 to Web3. It’s the same fundamental principles just applied in a different industry,” JC explained.
By the time interest in Axie Infinity, crypto, NFTs, and Web3 surged in 2020, JC was already ahead of the curve. He had converted what he was doing in Web2 into Web3 and fell in love with the space.
When he learned about Bitskwela and their search for a CMO, he knew he had to apply and contribute to the space.
“When I want to research crypto and Web3 in general, Google slaps me with many different sources. I need to read like 50 pages before I can get an idea of what Web3 really is. That’s why I added value to Bitskwela, and from then on, Jiro and I have been working together to build it,” JC added.
“I was really impressed with JC’s work back then and his past projects before Bitskwela. That’s why his name was already in my head when he applied as CMO of Bitskwela. It’s been a great pleasure to work with him and other team members from Bitskwela,” Jiro Reyes, Co-Founder of Bitskwela explained.
What Are the Pros and Cons of Switching Careers from Web2 to Web3?
JC shared that switching to Web3 provided him a better financial advantage compared to working in Web2 because the industry is well funded and there’s relatively little competition.
But JC’s success didn’t come without challenges. The biggest obstacle he faced in transitioning from Web2 to Web3 was the technical side of the industry. He knew that in order to succeed, he needed to learn everything there was to know about the technology behind it.
Today, JC is thriving in the Web3 industry, and his favorite part of the process has been connecting with successful people who share his passion.
He encourages others who are interested in pursuing a career in Web3 to do their own research and take the time to learn the technology behind it.
Through hard work, determination, and a willingness to take risks, JC has achieved great success in his career at a young age. JC Macalintal’s story is a testament to the power of following your passions, taking risks, and embracing new opportunities.
